Our home office needed a redesign to make it work better as our needs have changed. When I first started working at home a couple of years ago, we turned the room in our house that was supposed to be the formal living room into an office. We bought a large partners desk, a credenza and some file cabinets and kept the bookcases and rug that we had been using in there. My husband needed a large format printer for his work, which is HUGE at 40″ wide and 24″ deep, that we also purchased that takes up a lot of space.
We were desperately in need of more storage, especially for files. The desk and file cabinets that we bought a couple of years ago are part of the Ballard Designs Original Home Office collection. It is sturdy and so easy to create a layout for exactly what your needs are. I decided to continue with pieces from this collection rather than do built-ins to keep the look cohesive and I also love that the collection includes hutches for the credenzas, locking file cabinets, a pull-out printer tray, built-in charging station and lots of drawers! We moved the large format printer to another room, gaining 1/3 of the largest wall to fit an entire unit. As a result, we fit three large units across the largest wall to fully utilize both the horizonal and vertical space.
We were also lacking light in this room, we did our best to get a lot of lighting with lamps. We had four table lamps, a floor lamp, and an overhead plugin lamp! I have no idea why the builder of the house did not put in any overhead lighting in this room (and they also skipped the overhead lighting in all the bedrooms, too!) So, I am having overhead lighting put in.
Below is the design plan for the room. I am happy to be using an etagere that I had stored in my attic as it is such a nice piece! I will also be using my existing office chair and favorite office items. The painting and electrical is done and the new rug and office furniture have been placed. It will be a while for the custom pieces so final photos of the home office redesign won’t be posted for a while!
Here is the room with some of the furniture moved out of it with the old wall color, old rug and plug-in overhead light!
