I know this front hall closet makeover doesn’t look like much at first. It was a much needed to do project that resolved an issue that we have been living with day after day saying “I really need to fix this”! Organizing the front hall closet is not a fun chore and is one that I have been procrastinating for such a long time.
We don’t have a mudroom or a utility closet. I was able to add some hooks near the back door when we did our half bath laundry room makeover, but we don’t typically hang coats there since we need the hooks for laundry. Also there isn’t any room there to put bins. We were keeping our floor mops on the back of our basement door. The battery operated vacuum in the coat closet would fall down every time we took out a coat. The Bona mop would fall off the hook of the door sometimes and fall down the basement stairs. After this makeover we fit our coats, winter gear, bags and sweepers/mops all in one place!
A small Closetmaid closet system, a coat of paint, some new bins and labels and a battery operated light made a world of difference! Nothing is hanging on the back of the basement door anymore, we gained more space and are able to store extra things in the added bins.
Emptying the closet went fast. The most tedious part was removing the existing wire shelf, filling in the holes and then painting it.
We let the paint dry for a couple of days before we installed the small Closetmaid closet system.
These bins fit in the closet tower shelves perfectly:
I ordered these metal clip label holders to use in my pantry, but they looked and fit perfectly on the bins. I made my own labels with my inkjet printer and sticker paper and stuck them on the clips.
Even though the closet is small and is near the kitchen and front hall light, it is still pretty dark. Rather than have a light wired in, I found these great LED strip lights that are motion activated and come on when you open the door. They don’t need batteries, they are charged by USB so they are super thin. And they are bright!
Now that we have finished organizing the front hall closet, I think we can now call it an Everything Closet instead of a coat closet!

Wow! How did you fit all that in that little closet. I like all the baskets and the shelving system , and the motion detector lights are a great idea.

Thanks! It’s amazing what you can fit when you use all of the vertical space!
